HHhH - Laurent Binet

Currently wanting to talk about:
'HHhH' by Laurent Binet

So... LET'S TALK!
First off its won some awards, doesn't mean its going to be a great read. Secondly it's been suggested as the '2012s best read', also doesn't mean its going to be a great read.
Now that I'm reading it....
It's a GREAT READ!
Written as a fiction book, that also talks about the author and his researching processes, its unlike anything I have ever read before. I think this may be why it won awards, and its supposed to be the 2012 book, but who am I to say.
Its based on 'HHhH' which is an abbreviation of 'Himmler's Brain is called Heydrich' (in English of course) and refers to Heydrich, a real live person who was the brains behind many of the 'nasty' Nazi operations.
While sometime very confronting, it's well written and gives background to most of the stories. It is also great at incorporating what the author would like to 'artistically' add to the fictional story, but has chosen to show why it can or can't be included due to the research that was actually found.
All sound a bit confusing... bugger!
Just pick it up and give it a go....

Good writers suck.

My brain does not work I am not cut out for blogging... well, properly anyway.
The reason my brain isn't working is because I was up late last night at some ridiculous hour reading a book. I'm currently reading Bitterblue, the third book in its series. I thought to myself yesterday evening, hey why don't I read for a couple of minutes? It couldn't hurt. So I did. But a couple of minutes turned into half an hour, half an hour turned into two hours, and before I knew it, it was half past one in the morning. I didn't want to stop reading, either, because the way Bitterblue is written is so great and enthralling, it just draws you in and makes you curious, wanting to know more when you finish each chapter.
This is both a great and annoying thing, because I love how an author is able to write so well and get me so caught up in their story that I stay awake for hours on end to read page after page, but it also gets slightly irritating when you have to go into school the next morning, glaring and zombie-like, dragging your body and mind through the day hoping that the next class is uncovered so you can sleep finally.
So I've come to a conclusion. Good writers suck, because they theive me of my sleep and I enjoy it. Then the eventual withdrawal symptoms of a great book start to kick in, and I conciously decide to let the author steal away my precious hours of nap time just so I can know what happens after a stupid cliffhanger.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go and sleep for three days. Or I could go finish Bitterblue.

Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy . . . you decide???

There has been lots of talk of late of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy. From Internet chat rooms, to the school canteen, even on the sideline of the kids' soccer game, everywhere I turn people are talking about it. In fact, there has been so much talk that it has even sold out in Griffith stores!
I was looking for a review on the books just recently when I came across a library in the US who had banned all three books, yet another library in the US had over 100 patrons on its waiting list!
What is it with these books??? I had to know for myself!
I had just received a Kindle for Mothers Day, so I decided my first puchase would be the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy.
And let me tell you, I couldn't put it down! YET to try and describe the plot to my fellow co workers was hard. In some parts it was like a very descriptive Mills & Boon with alot of "Days of our Lives" drama involved, other parts I skimmed through because I felt like I had read it all before.  But in saying that, it consumed me day and night for a whole week, until I could finish it.
The main character, Christian Grey, I think might be every woman's secret fantasy. His attitude can be "cavemanish" (is that a word?) at times (in fact at all times) but underneath all the drama (and freakish amount of sex) is the heart of a man who wants to worship and protect the woman he loves. And really, what woman doesn't want that!
But don't let me decide for you, you must read for yourself. And I'd like to know what your opinion is???

The Griffith City Library has all three books (we don't censure here) call us on 69 622515 if you'd like to add your name to the reservation list. Or check out our catalogue online http://www.wrl.nsw.gov.au/

For more information on the trilogy and its author (E.L. James) go to http://www.eljamesauthor.com/

Margareta Osborn visits the Griffith City Library

What better way to finish off the week, than with a visit from an up and coming and extremely talented Australian author, Margareta Osborn!

Margareta, with her lovely family, braved the wild and wet weather we have been experiencing and included Griffith on their tour of the area and beyond. It was our great pleasure to have Margareta visit our library and would be thrilled to host her again in the future, perhaps for the release of book 2!!!

A signed copy of Margareta's debut novel, Bella's Run, is available for purchase from Collins Bookstore Griffith, or for loan from the Griffith City Library.

To read more about Margareta Osborn and "Bella's Run" go to http://www.margaretaosborn.com.au/

Here's a pic of library staff Rina and Monica with Margareta
